HomeMy WebLinkAboutR-2023-016 Urging Reversal of Rejection of AP Course on African American Studies in State High Schools executedRESOLUTION NO. 2023-016 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA, URGING THE FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION TO REVERSE ITS REJECTION OF AN ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSE COVERING AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES IN STATE HIGH SCHOOLS; OPPOSING THE DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION'S POSITION THAT THE ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSE COVERING AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES WILL INDOCTRINATE STUDENTS TO A POLITICAL AGENDA; SUPPORTING THE NEED FOR ADVANCED PLACEMENT COURSES ON AFRICAN AMERICAN STUDIES; PROVIDING FOR CONFLICTS; FURTHER, PROVIDING FOR AN EFFECTIVE DATE. WHEREAS, the College Board submitted an Advanced Placement ("AP") course covering African American Studies to the Florida Board of Education; and WHEREAS, the Florida Board of Education rejected the AP course covering African American Studies; and WHEREAS, Florida's Commissioner of Education, Many Diaz, Jr., states "Florida rejected an AP course filled with Critical Race Theory and other obvious violations of Florida Law"; and WHEREAS, the City of Dania Beach ("City") supports the state's high schools' ability to provide AP courses covering African American studies; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COMMISSION OF THE CITY OF DANIA BEACH, FLORIDA: Section 1. That the above "Whereas" clauses are ratified and confirmed, and they are made a part of and incorporated into this Resolution by this reference. Section 2. That the City urges the Florida Department of Education to reverse its rejection of the AP course on African American studies courses. Section 3. That the City supports the state high schools' ability to teach advanced placement African American studies courses. Section 4. That the City Clerk is requested to send a copy of this Resolution to the Florida Department of Education, the Office of Governor Ron DeSantis, the Broward League of Cities, the Florida League of Cities, the Broward County Board of County Commissioners, and any other interested parties. Section 5. That all resolutions or parts of resolutions in conflict with this Resolution are repealed to the extent of such conflict. Section 6.
