(Citizens Against Runway Expansion) expressed appreciation to the Commission for touring their area and allowing them to speak at this meeting. Mr. Fie1d informed the Commission that residents in the newly annexed area would like to see Dania address the following issues: 4. the need to address the construction of the incinerator at the Port; 5. the need for strict radar enforcement of 45 MPH speed limit on Griffin Road; immediate curfer.r on the south from the cross di agonal Dania to reaffirm its opposition runway; address the noise problem. due to along the north runway and on 27 th the 6. the need for concern for residents and 31st Avenue as these roads were added to Broward County Trafficways Plan; 7. the need for concern to prohibit trucks and re-route traffi-c from using sw 30th Avenue with the importing of garbage by the County from Monroe county; 8. the need to landscape theGriffin Road. medium strip on WORKSHOP MEETTNG I ,JULY 17, 1990 Mr. Field suggested two possibilities for the referendum; to either hold a Primary Electlon on September 4 or to hold a General Election on November6. Mr. Field explained that the voter registrationwould close August 6 for the Primary and October 8 forthe General. Mr. Field suggested the campaign for thereferendum on annexation be ca11ed "Dania Now" and thatDania should emphasize the primary concern beingprotection for residents from the airport expansion. Mr. Field stated that residents r,,ould like to see a tax comparison between Dania and the County and mentionedthat Dania should inform new residents that is not moreexpensive to live in Dania. Mr. Field stated thatresidents shoutd be aware that the commercial propertyon Griffin Road has already been annexed and thatrevenue from these businesses will not be used for theresidential neighborhoods unless they are annexed. Mr.Eield also mentioned the need to oppose the sludgeplant project. Bunny Brahman, Vice President of CARE, expressedneed to get to know the business people in theannexation area prior to sending out the noticesthem to take out their occupational licenses for BiIl Hyde suggested to get people interested onfirst referendum as there is less interest fromthe longer the annexation issue goes on. City Manager Flatley mentioned that he feltbetter to hold the referendum in November totime for proper notification. the for Dani-a. the peopl e Discussion continued with the residents in the arearegarding the misconception that Dania has the highesttax base. Mr. Flatley confirmed that last year. Daniawas in fifth place and that Dania will be even lowerthis year. *Future structure of the City Comnission (five versusseven menbers. districting or not. no change, etc.) it would beallow more theCity Manager Flatley discussed the need to wait for Census count results in order to obtain a morerealistic percentage of registered voters in orderdetermine the need for addltional City Commission members. to tlnfrastructure needs City Manager Flatley mentioned the need to hear fromthe different civic groups in the annexation area inorder to determine infrastructure needs. *Service requirements City Manager Flatley mentioned that the pick-up servicein the annexation area for hard goods items r.rill be ona monthly basis Hith Dania instead of a quarterfy basj-swith the County. Mr. FIaLley mentioned that garbagepick-up will remaln with the County as they just passeda 7 year contract for garbage pick-up in that area. Vice Mayor Mikes expressed his opinion that theannexation residents have more to gain by vofunteeringto come into the city for better representation onmajor conflicts Iike the airport expansion. 2WORKSHOP MEETING JULY 17, 1990 Commissioner Bertino sugges tedpublic hearing relating to theairport expansion at a location area. an addi tional review on the newly annexation having D.R.I. in the Commissioner Cook commended Mayor McElyea for his ideaof touring the annexation area and expressedappreciation to the residents from the annexation areafor expressing their suggestions and encouragedcontinued involvement, The Commission generally agreed to schedule events andattend meetings in the annexation area to get betteracquainted with residents and businesses prior to November. City Manager Flatfey encouraged residents in theannexation area to become involved in the City Commission Meetings that take place on the second andfourth Tuesdays of each month.
