Mr. Tillmanstated that he would be interested in refocating to Dania and that he would be comfortable wit.h starting ata salary of S40,000. Ken Coleman, currently employed with the City of Gunnison, Colorado as Water Department Superintendent, informed the Commission that he recently received a degree ln Finance. Mr. Coleman explained that due tofack of further growth in his current position, he felta need to search for a position such as Dania is of f er j-ng. Mr. Coleman presented an overview of hisqualifications and past history and requested furtherinformation from the Commlssion on their requirementsfor the position. Paul I-,ee, currently employed with Miami Dade Water and SeHer Department. Miami, Florida as MainLenance Supervisor II. explained that he has 21 years experience in utilities development and a B.S. inAgricultural Engineering from the University of Tennessee. Mr. Lee explained that he is presently in charge of a 221 employee section of the Miami- Dade Water and Sewer Department that is responsible for the maintenance repair of the underground pipelinefacifities for the water and sewer system. Mr. Lee expressed a desire to being responsible for a smallerwater system like Dania's opposed to the rigorousactivity with Miami Dade I,Jater and Sewer Department.Mr. Lee expressed a desire to obtain a salary comparable to his present S46,000 salary. 30 00 30 :o WORXSHOP MEETTNG .t AUGUST 27, I99O alanes Crook, currently employed as Project Manager for Mishawaka Municipal Utilities, Mishawaka, fndiana, informed the Commission that he has been employed with Mishawaka since 1970 and supervises 27 employeesdirectly under him and 11 office personnel and 7 meter readers that are funded through the Utility Department.Mr. Crook mentioned that he was involved with a majorrehabilitation of his water plant in 1971 and recentlyfinished the completion of a new 8 million gallon a dayfacility in the northern section of his town. Comments continued with Mr. Crook on Dania's need and plans forrehabilitation of the Water Plant. Michael Shelharer, currently employed with the City of Delray Beach Water Treatment Plant as Uti-lity Plant Operator IV-A and also with Mock, Ross & Associates,explained that he has over l-3 years of utilityoperations and management experience with several companies. Mr. Shelhamer informed the Commission that he possesses a Class A 1j-cense as both water plant operator and wastewater plant operator. Mr. Shelhamer mentioned that he is presently working two jobs at a combined salary of $56.000 and that he is asking $40,000 for the position with Dania. Mr. Shelhamer expressed a desire to be a Utility Director and toexert his efforts into one position opposed to twopositions. Mike Smith, Personnel Director, informed the Commissionthat he received 48 applications for the position ofUtility Director and that around 60* of the applicants possessed a degree and all had some colleqe background.Mr. Smith mentioned that 12 candidates were originally chosen from the 48 applications received and then 5final candidates were chosen based on qualifications matching the position. The Commission discussed engineering, licensing, age.job experience. salary and job stability of each candidate interviewed with Thomas crammer, ActingUtility Director, in an effort to select the mostqualified individual for the position. Discussion continued regarding this position requiring an individual having some engineering background inorder to make decisions without consulting our City Engineers in an effort to cut costs for the City.
